If you are able to admit that you have a problem, you have just taken your first step towards recovery. If you are able to admit that you can never have enough yarn, and could give a DAMN about recovery, then go visit Scout, buy some of her yarn and join the anti-stash along. As human beings, I believe that is completely within our rights to amass as many material things as we would like. That is why I believe God created someone who created my personal golden idol:Mastercard.
Mastercard and I are completely within our rights to purchase, say sock yarn to sniff, cuddle hold and yes, occasionally knit into socks or other fuzzy items. We have good times together, Mastercard and I. And then when Payday rolls around every other week, I pay my tithes to the oh holy one (gotta get it in before the grace period expires!) so that I may once again, from the privacy of my inner sanctum, purchase more yarn. Or exercise DVD's that I will never use. Or camping gear. Or even cookie cookbooks. So leave me alone about how big my stash is, because I could care less.

What to do with my swap yarn...

Immediately after receiving my swap yarn, I was faced with the question that has no doubt plagued knitters since the dawn of time, "what do I make?" The obvious answer, to me, would be socks. Ever since I knit that first pair of socks using the Magic Loop method of knitting 2 socks at once, I have been hooked. I mean HOOKED. Has anyone ever seen the King of the Hill episode where Hank mistakenly buys crack cocaine as bait for fishing and the fish become totally hooked and pretty soon he ends up in drug court trying to convince the judge that he was using crack as a fishing bait? I am as hooked on socks as those fish on crack. So hooked that I purchased 16 skeins of sock yarn in order to knit each and every member of my immediate family a pair of socks for Christmas (you all better not read this part). I digress.
Socks are the order of the day, and I have indeed started a pair with my swap yarn.
Pattern: Conwy from Knitting on the Road by Nancy Bush. (now would be the perfect time to post a picture but the batteries in my camera just died. Sigh.)
Last night I managed to cast on and knit the ribbing plus about 1 1/2 " of the leg pattern. Never mind that I have exactly one self-striping sock and one Raspberry Limeade Jaywalker (2nd sock syndrome, anyone?). Oh well, time to go cook up my fix.

I got my ya-arn, nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah!

My Dye-O-Rama swap yarn came in the mail yesterday, Yay!!!! I know that she likes vivid colors, so the pastels were definitely a no-go. I've always been inspired by the beautiful tie-dyes that can be found so easily around here in Humboldt, so I was trying to paint my yarn along those lines. I had been anxiously checking my emails for the past week, and each time I would feel this awesome sense of rejection when I didn't have a note from either of my buddies. I know, so sad. But today was like Christmas and my birthday all in one! I have touched base with both of my buddies and I feel good! Now I can actually get into dying mode and get started. I have already knitted up one of the self-striping socks from my test skein, and it looks pretty good. I had a little trial and error with the Wilton's food coloring and the dyes breaking and making a little bit of variegation, but I am overall very pleased with my first attempts. If you check out my flickr photos on the right you can get some good views of the first sock. Not bad, eh?
I have been doing some furious Mother's Day knitting for the last 2 days. I decided to (and check my insanity level here) knit my mom a pair of socks from my beautiful stash of Regia Canadian color. I picked the blue/green/yellow colorway since she looks awesome in those pastels. When I split the yarn in order to cast on both socks at once, I decided to not line up the stripes so that the socks would match, but not be carbon copies. So far, they are turning out nicely.
I am also working on a winter hat for my Bitch's little boy and a shrug for my Bitch. They are coming over from Redding this weekend, so I have quite a bit of knitting on my plate to get done by Saturday. Yes, I love a challenge and driving myself insane with too much to do. It shouldn't be too hard: the shrug is Glampyre's One Skein Wonder and the hat an intarsia star hat with a topknot that I made up from 2 or 3 different patterns. Let the countdown begin:only 3 days to get all of the knitting done! Wish me luck...

On knitting while sick

Yes, I am sick. Not in the dramatic over-the-too sick that was my husband and the little dude (complete with vomiting, diarrhea and fever) a few days ago but sick nonetheless. At this point I am blaming it all on being cooped up in a tiny ICU room with recycled air for two days with two different strains of respiratory viruses. The first day was RSV, the second simply an unknown respiratory virus. How did I get so lucky, you ask? In the small obstetrics unit that I work in, I am one of the nurses who considers herself competent to care for, and usually likes to care for, sick neonates. 24 hours over 2 days spent with these 2 babes was all it took to put my body under siege of some unknown virus. An I was not the only lucky one. My coworker had the good fortune to be so sick that she could barely speak for about 4 days and then contracted conjunctivitis. Let me just say that I did not sign up this when I entered nursing school. So needless to say, not a lot of knitting or dyeing has gotten done over the last few days. I am hoping that next week, my days off will be a little bit more enjoyable.
I have managed to make a good bit of progress on my "Humboldt honey" striping socks, I am close to the toes on the first sock. I have been very please at how the colors and stripes turned out on my first dye job. Everyone at work who saw me with them has been very complimentary. Of course, they could have just been trying to be nice to me since I looked like the walking dead. Oh well, I have a date with the Vick's Vapo-Rub. I will post pics of the socks soon, I promise!

I have officially de-flowered, um, myself from the yarn dyeing process. I have to say that while the pattern is super pretty, it is just a little bit, well, boring. I am seriously doubting my decision to give up on the pomatomus. For the sake of my future and my brain (that I would like to keep from exploding in case I need it anytime in the near future) I am thinking I have to give it up. Just let it go, Flo.

I am hoping that today or tomorrow will bring a lovely present from the postman (wonder twin powers activate!)in the form of knitpicks dye your own sock yarn. I think that I ordered something like, 8 skeins. I have absolutely no control over myself with the yarn. Yeah. I have decided to try and experiment with my Wilton frosting food coloring paste and see how that dyes my yarn. We'll see.

I QUIT!

Yes, I have officially given up on the Pomatomus socks. Now I am not one to claim defeat so early on, but I got tired of knitting then ripping out then knitting again only to find more mistakes. (sigh) I just wish those socks weren't so lovely...

I have decided that my scrumptious Raspberry Limeade sock yarn from Dani at Sunshine Yarn will now be relegated to the lovely Jaywalker pattern by Grumperina in MagKnits. I think that I have mourned the loss of the Pomatomus enough that I will be able to move on and start knitting the jaywalkers right away. I'd like to get them on the needles and going strong before SnB on thursday. Wish me luck!

I am in Pomatomus hell

Seriously, this sock pattern will be the death of me. I took all of the confidence I had gained from knitting two (count 'em-2) pairs of magic loop socks and plunged head first into the pomatomus. What a crock of shit. To see what is making me crazy, visit here:http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter05/PATTpomatomus.html

I can't even bear to post pics, because it really is THAT BAD.

After the hell I endured trying desperately to knit the pomatomus socks, I had a little fun laughing until I cried about Snakes on a Plane. If you haven't heard of this yet, you need to go here to see the trailer:http://www.tagworld.com/snakesonaplane

Seriously, Samuel L Jackson, what little respect I had for you as Shaft and Mace Windoo has now been completely erased. Gone. But unlike SLJ, I have not "had it with these mothafuckin snakes". Click, click, boom! I cannot get enuff!!!!!
Anybody want to join me for a snakes on a plane world premiere party? I thought wemight start the night off with some King Cobra Malt Liquor (40 oz.) of course. But before we take a drink, I might have to spill a little for my homies, all those snakes that SLJ killed.. You know he did, 'cuz he's one baaaadass muthafucka'!

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and...

Here are some things that I have finished over the last few weeks...I finally found the charger for my camera and was able to post some pics!

Project: Fingerless gloves from Last Minute Knitted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson

Yarn: Rowan Cashsoft knitted on sz 4 circulars. (I am officially in love with the teeny-tiny 8"Clover circulars!)

These were gifted to my sis who works in a grocery store and is often chilly but needs her fingers free to do her job.

Pattern: Toe-up Magic loop socks (my first pair ever!)

Yarn: Claudia's hand painted yarn in Just Plum

These socks have officially fueled the addictive knitting fire that burns within my very soul. Seriously, I could not get enough of these socks. Quite a miracle considering just how much I hate stockinette (note the little dude's weasley sweater that I started about 5 months ago and have never finished). I am now burning to get at any sock yarn, pattern or Addi Turbo 40" circular in a 50 mile radius just to get my fix.

Next...

Pattern: Clapotis found at Knitty.com

Yarn: Malabrigo merino in Loro Baranquerro colorway. I think that this project may be my all-time favorite, even with my beginner's mistakes. Can you see the stripe down the middle? When I was proudly showing this off at my weekly SnB, my coworker (who has been knitting since before God made dirt) told me how I could have avoided that. Oops. I worked so damn hard on this thing that there was NO WAY I was going to frog it and start over!

Pattern: Glampyre's One Skein Wonder

Yarn: Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted in Black Pearl colorway. While I understand this is not the best picture one could take of a shrug, I couldn't resist posting it because it features the little dude. He got his first "big person" haircut at the barber shop yesterday so I just had to include him. I will try to post a more flattering pic of this awesome shrug at a later date when the Man is in a better mood and will take my pic.

Off to bed, there are babies who will be needing me in the morning!

Look out world....here comes the dye!
